With Earth Day just around the corner, we wanted to remind you that high-quality dental care practices don’t have to be wasteful! A reported one billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away annually, which adds up to 50 million pounds of plastic waste each year. While we encourage you to change out the head of your toothbrush at least once every three months, there are many different sustainable ways to care for your teeth as well as the planet. From toothbrushes to floss and even toothpaste and mouthwash, businesses worldwide are focusing on the production of earth-loving dental tools. To help bring awareness to some sustainable dental care companies, materials, and innovations, we’re sharing our favorite eco-friendly dental products.
One of the first easy switches you can make to start practicing more sustainable dental care is just by switching the material of your toothbrush. Make the change from plastic toothbrushes to a more eco-friendly version made out of bamboo. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable materials on earth. It is fast-growing and self-regenerates from its roots. This means that it does not require fertilizer or pesticides and does not need nearly as much water as other crops, like cotton. Bamboo is also 100% biodegradable, which means it won’t sit in a landfill for generations to come.
Brushes with changeable brush heads
For our patients who choose electric toothbrushes, you are most likely on the right sustainability track. Electric toothbrushes tend to be more effective when it comes to removing decay-causing plaque and bacteria. They also typically require a change of the brush head instead of replacing the entire toothbrush. If you prefer the deep clean of an electric toothbrush, make sure you choose a model that allows you to replace the brush head so you can ensure you’re able to change out your bristles every three months without the need to throw away an entire toothbrush.
Flossing is one of the most necessary essential steps in your dental care routine, but unfortunately, both dental picks and traditional floss are made in a single-use plastic format. Fortunately, refillable floss picks and refillable floss dispensers offer a sustainable alternative to your favorite flossing methods!
When it comes to flossing, the packaging isn’t the only part that is wasteful. Even the string floss itself can end up in a landfill. Instead of the traditional floss, look for brands that use environmentally friendly materials like silk and vegan wax so that you can floss your smile with a clear conscience.
It’s no secret that water flossers are one of our favorite eco-friendly dental products. Not only do water flossers eliminate the need for both traditional floss and wasteful packaging, but they are also more effective than other flossing methods! While water flossers can be pricier than string floss, they promote a cleaner smile and a healthier planet.
Traditional toothpaste not only comes in disposable plastic containers, but it can also be challenging to get every last bit of the toothpaste out of the tube. That is why companies like Bite were so appealing to consumers when they debuted their Toothpaste Bits on the television show Shark Tank. These toothpaste tablets come in a plastic-free glass jar and are perfectly portioned for each time you brush your teeth., making them one of our favorite eco-friendly dental products. All you have to do is bite down on the tablet, wet your toothbrush, and then brush away.
While tablets are a great alternative to traditional toothpaste tubes, they are not the only sustainable toothpaste option. Other companies like Georganics have created toothpaste in the form of a stick. With this form of toothpaste, you wet your toothbrush, rub it directly onto the toothpaste stick, and then brush. Not only can you use this toothpaste until the very end, but it also comes in a recyclable and compostable paper tube.
To round out your dental care routine, mouthwash is also capable of coming in eco-friendly forms. Brands such as by Humankind have created portable mouthwash tablets that come with colorful containers so you can take it on-the-go. Simply drop a mouthwash tablet in your container with a little water, swish, and you’re all set. No alcohol burn or single-use plastic is required.
